Trading Range:

Nifty opened flat to negative at 10905 on Thursday and made a high and low of 10908 and 10718 respectively before closing negative at 10741.

Review/Outlook:

For the day, support for Nifty exists at 10680 and 10600 levels whereas resistance for Nifty stands at 10800 and 11860 levels.

Bank Nifty opened gap down at 27690, made a high of 27690, made a low of 26976 and closed negative at 27034 levels. For the day, support for Bank Nifty exists at 26800 and 26500 levels whereas resistance for Bank Nifty stands at 27400 and 27600 levels.

Corporate News
Diageo has said it has acquired a further 3,310,515 shares (0.46 per cent shareholding) in United Spirits Ltd at a per share price of Rs.591.95. The shares were purchased on the Bombay Stock Exchange and takes Diageo’s controlling shareholding position to 55.2 per cent of USL. The recovery official of the Debt Recovery Tribunal was the seller of the share. (BL).
The country’s largest biscuit-maker, Britannia Industries, is looking to beat slowdown blues through a mix of cost optimisation, “judicious” price hikes and low unit packs (LUPs). (ET).
India Ratings and Research has revised the outlook on Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) to negative from stable due to higher than expected decline in its revenue, leading to EBITDA losses in 1QFY20. (BL).
Drug firm Granules India on Thursday said the US health regulator has issued two observations after inspection of Chantilly facility of its American arm in Virginia. (ET).
International Coal Ventures Ltd (ICVL) proposes to almost double the supply of coal from Mozambique to meet the targeted 10 per cent requirement of Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) and Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd (RINL). (ET).
State-run oil refiner Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) is seeking to double its profits by 2024 on the back of a Rs 74,200 crore investment that focuses on earning higher margins in existing and new business. (BL).
Gillette India Ltd on Thursday reported a 32.35 per cent rise in net profit at Rs.45.82 crore for the fourth quarter ended June 30, 2019. The company, which follows July-June financial year, had reported a net profit of Rs.34.62 crore in the April-June period a year ago. Gillette India’s revenue from operations during the quarter rose 13.22 per cent to Rs.464 crore from Rs.409.76 crore in the corresponding quarter last fiscal. (BS).
Drug major Lupin on Thursday said it will divest its Japanese injectables business to neo ALA Co Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Abu Dhabi-headquartered Neopharma group. Lupin has entered into a definitive agreement through its Japanese subsidiary Kyowa for the said deal. In more news, Lupin announced the launch of Fluoxetine Tablets USP, 10 mg and 20 mg, having received an approval from the United States Food and Drug Administration (U.S. FDA) earlier. (ET).
Economy and Sector News
Kia Motors launched the mid-sized SUV, Seltos, in India on Thursdayat a price range of Rs 9.69 lakh to Rs 15.99 lakh (ex-showroom).The Seltos is BS-VI compliant and is available in both petrol and diesel variants with manual and automatic transmission options. In more news, Tiger Global Management has invested $15 million in INDwealth.in, a full stack wealth management platform targeted at HNIs and affluent families. (BL).
After investing around Rs.10,700 crore in the first three months of the current financial year, foreign investors pulled out nearly Rs.6,700 crore from the financial sector in July. According to data available with depositories, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) pulled out Rs.6,468 crore from bank equities in July and Rs.229 crore from other financial services which includes financial institutions, housing finance companies and non-banking financial companies (NBFCs). In more news, the Bombay High Court on Thursday quashed the attachment of bank accounts and properties belonging to 63 moons technologies (formally Financial Technologies) and its promoter Jignesh Shah under the Maharashtra Protection of Interest of Depositors (MPID) Act. In all, assets worth around ₹8,500 crore were attached by police under MPID, which will have to be released now. (ET).
Domestic airlines flew 1.19 crore passengers in July this year registering a 3.15 per cent growth over the 1.15 crore passengers flown during the same period previous year. Data released by the aviation regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation show that IndiGo retained the No.1 position in terms of number of passengers carried with 56.93 lakh, while SpiceJet came second flying 18.48 lakh passengers. GoAir flew 13.26 lakh passengers. AirAsia carried 7.71 lakh passengers in July this year, while Vistara flew 7.15 lakh passengers. SpiceJet reported the highest Passenger Load Factor (PLF) of 92.4 per cent among the domestic airlines in July followed by Go Air (90.4 per cent), Air Asia (89.5 per cent) IndiGo (89.5 per cent), and Vistara (82.4 per cent). The industry paid over Rs.4.35 crore including Rs.2.03 crore to the over 2.55 lakh passengers affected by delays. In addition, the industry paid over Rs.1.21 crore to over 48,000 passengers affected by cancellations of flights. (BL).
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has declared Ocean Energy as renewable energy. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has clarified to all the stakeholders that energy produced using various forms of ocean energy such as tidal, wave, ocean thermal energy conversion among others shall be considered as renewable energy and shall be eligible for meeting the non-solar Renewable Purchase Obligations (RPO), an official statement said. (ET).

DJIA and NASDAQ Composite

US markets closed closed mixed on Thursday as a slide in technology companies offset a rally in bank shares. Treasuries dropped as Federal Reserve officials cast doubt on further interest-rate cuts. The Dow Jones Index closed at 26,252, up 49.51 points by 0.19%. The Standard & Poors 500 index closed at 2,923, down 1.48 points by 0.05%. The Nasdaq Composite Index closed at 7,991, down 28.82 points by 0.36%.

FTSE 100

UK markets fell on Thursday, after two top US central bank officials poured cold water on expectations for further policy easing. The FTSE 100 index closed at 7,128, down 75.79 points by 1.05%.

Precious Metals

Gold futures posted their lowest settlement in nearly two weeks on Thursday, pressured by strength in bond yields as the Fed’s symposium of central bankers got under way in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

Base Metals

The London Metal Exchange three-month zinc price was lower at the close of trading on Thursday August 22, a day in which trading ranged $2,230-2,290 per tonne, while the backwardation in the nickel forward spread widened to its highest since 2015.

Crude Oil

Oil futures ended lower on Thursday, weighed down by expectations for surplus supplies, with the economy and energy demand moving back into focus on the first day of the Jackson Hole economic policy symposium in Wyoming.
