Trading Range:

Nifty opened gap up at 11465 on Wednesday and made a high and low of 11481 and 11411 respectively before closing positive at 11464.

Review/Outlook:

For the day, support for Nifty exists at 11400 and 11330 levels whereas resistance for Nifty stands at 11510 and 11560 levels.

Bank Nifty opened gap up at 28689, made a high of 28759, low of 28305, and closed flat to negative at 28539. For the day, support for Bank Nifty exists at 28300 and 28000 levels, whereas resistance for Bank Nifty stands at 28800 and 29000 levels.

The Delhi High Court (HC) has ordered Gurpreet Dhillon, the Head of Radha Soami Satsang Beas (RSSB), and his family to be personally present on November 14, to explain how they owe money to former Fortis promoters -- Malvinder Singh and Shivinder Singh. (ET).
NITI Aayog Chief Executive Officer Amitabh Kant on Wednesday said that amidst disruption in the electric automobile category, the country should not miss the bus of being a hub for electric vehicles (EVs) in the world. Speaking at the unveiling of a Bajaj electric scooter, Kant said that India missed out on many areas in various industries. (BL).
The Adani Group’s solar panel manufacturing arm, Adani Solar, has launched its retail distribution business in Telangana with Amplifymart as official channel partner. With this channel expansion, Adani Solar has reached 500 towns for solar panels distribution in India. (ET).
Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Tamil Nadu Industrial Explosives Limited (TEL), a Tamil Nadu government undertaking, for co-operation in the explosives segment. (ET).
Indian Overseas Bank (IOB) has entered into an agreement with Magicbricks, an online property marketplace, for the e-auction of more than 500 re-possessed properties worth more than Rs.800 crore. The e-auction will be carried out in two phases - on October 21 and October 30. (BL).
The country's largest automotive battery maker, Exide Industries Ltd, has forayed into the manufacture of e-rickshaws. The new vertical, which the company launched on Wednesday, is likely to add nearly Rs.120 crore to its topline in the first full year of operations (in FY-21). (ET).
Vodafone Idea said that sanction of the Scheme of Arrangement between the company and its wholly-owned subsidiary Vodafone Towers Limited (VTL), for transfer of Fiber Infrastructure Undertaking of the Company to VTL, by way of a demerger. (ET).
NALCO said coal shortages have severely impacted its aluminium production. “Short supply of coal has severely impacted Aluminium production of NALCO and also the cost of power, as the power purchased from the grid is costly as compared to the power produced by NALCO at its CPP,” the state-run unit said in a statement. Presently, three units of Nalco’s Captive Power Plant, each of 120 megawatt capa. (BQ).
Edelweiss Financial Services: The Competition Commission of India has approved Kora Master Fund LP’s investment if up to 10 percent stake in the company’s arm Edelweiss Securities for $75 million, according to its media stateent. (BQ).
Quarterly Earnings
Media group DB Corp on Wednesday reported a 63.6 per cent increase in consolidated net profit at Rs 75.57 crore in the second quarter ended on September 30, 2019. The company had reported a net profit of Rs 46.19 crore in the July-September quarter a year ago. However, revenue from operations during the quarter under review was down 8.70 per cent at Rs 531.39 crore as against Rs 582.09 crore in second quarter of 2018-19. (BL).
Mid-sized IT firm Mindtree posted a profit of Rs 135 crore for the quarter ended September, down 35% from Rs 206.3 crore in the year-ago quarter, hurt by higher expenses on account of salary increases and headcount. Revenue grew 9 % during the same period to Rs 1914 crore. On dollar basis, profit stood at $19.2 million on a revenue of $271.0 million. (BS).
Federal Bank on Wednesday posted a 51.58 per cent year-on-year (YoY) rise in consolidated net profit at Rs 425.34 crore for the quarter ended September 2019. The private sector lender had reported a net profit of Rs 280.61 crore in the corresponding quarter last year. Net interest income (NII) of the lender increased 12.42 per cent YoY to Rs 1,182.53 crore in Q2FY20 over Rs 1,051.84 crore in Q2FY19. Provisions and contingencies inched lower to Rs 253.43 crore during the quarter under review against Rs 285.60 crore in the same period last year. The figure stood at Rs 193.32 crore in the preceding quarter ended June 2019. Asset quality of the lender deteriorated marginally with percentage of gross non-performing assets rising to 3.06 per cent against 2.98 per cent on quarter-on-quarter (QoQ) basis. The figure stood at 3.10 per cent in the same quarter last year. (BL).
Economy and Sector News
The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has approved Kora Master Fund LP investment of upto 10 per cent ($75 million) in Edelweiss Securities Ltd. In more news, the national highways building authority has invited bids for its fourth bundle of Toll-Operate-Transfer (TOT) projects, looking to raise around Rs 4,200 crore. The government had introduced the TOT model in 2016 for monetisation of publicly-funded highways. Under this, investors make a one-time lump sum payment in return for long-term toll collection rights. (BL).
The population of cows in the country has risen by 18 per cent in the last seven years, while that of oxen dipped by 30 per cent, according to the latest census of livestock. The total number for livestock was pegged at around 536 million. The provisional data of the 20th Livestock Census released by the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying on Wednesday showed that the livestock population increased by 4.6 per cent, from 512.06 million in 2012. (ET).
Factoring the headwinds faced by the wind and solar energy power segments coupled with a gradual deterioration in the liquidity profile of the Independent Power Producers (IPPs) due to payment delays from some distribution utilities, ICRA has revised their rating outlook of almost one-third of its rated portfolio. About 20% (1.9 GW) of the rated portfolio in wind and solar power segments in terms of installed capacity has been downgraded, while the rating outlook has been revised for another 10% of the portfolio. The Reserve Bank on Wednesday imposed a Rs 3 crore penalty on SBM Bank (India) for non-compliance of regulatory norms by SBM Bank (Mauritius), which amalgamated with the former in November 2018. The penalty has been imposed for non-compliance by SBM Bank (Mauritius) with certain provisions of directions issued by the central bank on 'Time-bound implementation and strengthening of SWIFT - related operational controls' and 'Cyber Security Framework in Banks', the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said in a statement. (ET).

DJIA and NASDAQ Composite

US markets lost ground on Wednesday as weak U.S. economic data and simmering geopolitical tensions spooked buyers away from the equities market, despite a string of generally positive third-quarter earnings reports. The Dow Jones Index closed at 27,002, down 22.82 points by 0.08%. The Standard & Poors 500 index closed at 2,990, down 5.99 points by 0.20%. The Nasdaq Composite Index closed at 8,124, down 24.52 points by 0.30%.

FTSE 100

UK markets slipped on Wednesday as pound strength continued to take its toll and with souring relations between the US and China denting the mood further. The FTSE 100 index closed at 7,168, down 43.69 points by 0.61%.

Asian shares on started trading early on Thursday morning on a positive note as investors will be watching the US markets closely. Nikkei is currently trading at 22,473, up 265.71 points by 1.20%.

Precious Metals

Gold prices ended higher on Wednesday as investors watched global political news surrounding trade and Brexit, and reacted to a weaker-than-expected reading of U.S. retail sales, which spurred some haven buying.

Base Metals

The three-month price of nickel on the London Metal Exchange was down at the close of trading on Wednesday October 16, settling at its lowest level since August 29 amid thin turnover, while lead continued to rally over the afternoon.

Crude Oil

Oil futures on Wednesday registered their first climb in three sessions, recouping much of the loss they suffered a day earlier, but worries over demand prospects remained, with prices holding onto a sizable week-to-date loss.
